California Dreamin' California ('98: 5-6, 3-5 Pac-10)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:08 PM
The Plot
All-defense, no-offense team must strike a balance to move into Pac-10's upper echelon.
The DirectorTom Holmoe -- third year, 8-14; 8-14 overall
StarringLB Matt Beck -- Second in conference in tackles-for-loss to teammate Sanyika.DE Andre Carter -- Son of former NFLer "Hurricane" Carter ready for breakthrough year. DT Jerry DeLoach -- Anchored league's No. 3-ranked rushing and passing defenses. LB Sekou Sanyika -- Topped Pac-10 in tackles-for-loss with 23.
And introducingQB Kyle Boller -- Prep All-America is expected to assume starting spot.
Why it will workThe Bears have more returning all-conference defenders than any other team.
Why it won'tToo little talent on offense. We know defense wins championships, but it can't do it single-handedly. Line allowed 58 sacks last year and Boller will need time to get acclimated.
