Post-Daunte Inferno Central Florida ('98: 9-2)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:08 PM
The Plot
Minnesota Vikings draft prodigy Daunte Culpepper and his 11,412 passing yards put the Golden Knights on the I-A map; now it's up to his predecessors to keep them there. This year, with QB, receiver and the offensive line all depleted, UCF will rely on its defense to win games, which isn't a bad thing. Seven starters return from a unit that gave up nearly 100 fewer points than the year before.
The DirectorMike Kruczek -- second season, 9-2
Ensemble castWR Charles Lee - No. 3 receiver in '98 (656 yards) moves up to No. 1.CB Jeff Fye - Hardest-hitting 5-foot-8, 160-pounder around. DT Justen Moore - Registered eight sacks and 12 tackles-for-loss in '98.
And introducingQB Victor Penn - The JUCO transfer, one of four candidates vying for the vacancy left by Culpepper, brings an impressive credential: named an SEC all-freshman while at South Carolina in 1997.
Why it will workUCF's defense should be solid and running game decent.
Why it won'tCulpepper and departed receivers were immeasurably responsible for last season's 9-2 mark.
