The Plot

How many first-round NFL draft picks played on a 3-8 team in the Mid-American Conference? That was the case last year for tackle L.J. Shelton. While not everyone can play at his level, Shelton showed that there is talent in Ypsilanti. Now, if that talent could just win, like it did in an upset of Toledo last season.

The Director

Rick Rasnick -- fifth season, 16-28.

Ensemble cast

QB Walt Church -- Completed 60 percent of passes in first year as starter.
WR Jermaine Sheffield -- Approached 1,000 yards last season.
CB Lincoln Dupree -- Undersized (5-foot-10), but notched four INTs in '98.
WR Justin McCareins -- If someone can get the ball to him, McCareins will catch it, like he did 12 times in one game.
FS Donald McCall -- Led team with 128 tackles.

Why it will work

Reliable passing game and plenty of skill in secondary. Why it won't: Questionable running game and inexperience on offensive line.
