Armed and Dangerous Florida State (’98: 11-2, 7-1 ACC)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:16 PM
The Plot
Never before has Bobby Bowden had so much talent return to Tallahassee. The Seminoles bring back 16 starters and take aim at the school's second national title of the decade. Want a stat to remember? Florida State has won 10 or more games and finished in the top four of the final poll for the past 13 years. The Seminoles easily will repeat that this season, and anything short of a win in the national championship will be considered a failure by most of the FSU players and fans.
The DirectorBobby Bowden -- 33rd season, 219-53-4; 292-85-4 overall
StarringWR Peter Warrick -- Decision to return for senior season gave ACC cornerbacks nightmares.DT Corey Simon -- Took a while to become starter, but now anchors fastest defense in country.
Co-starringQB Chris Weinke -- If he hadn't injured his neck last season, Seminoles might be trying to repeat as national champs.CB Mario Edwards -- Swiped six passes last season, but depth in secondary forces him to work to keep his job. RB Travis Minor -- Injuries the only thing keeping him from 1,000-yard season thus far. K Sebastian Janikowski -- Truly a special teams weapon for the Seminoles.
And introducingRB Nick Maddox -- Might have trouble with Minor ahead of him, but he's too talented to stay on bench for long. Why it will workThe talent and dedication to get Bowden his second national title of the decade. Why it won'tFinal game of regular season is a trip to The Swamp to play rival Florida.
