Mad Dog and Glory Georgia (’98: 9-3, 6-2 SEC)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:17 PM
The Plot
Quincy Carter now knows what SEC football is all about. After a freshman season that served as his initiation, Carter has the capability to lead Georgia to its first conference championship since 1982. But Carter won't have anything like a Herschel Walker to help carry the Dawgs. Instead, he has to rely on inexperience at both running back and receiver.
The DirectorJim Donnan -- fourth season, 24-11; 88-32 overall
StarringQB Quincy Carter -- He's a legitimate Heisman candidate. But there is room for improvement -- there were five games last season in which he didn't throw a touchdown pass. LB Orantes Grant -- Seems to have radar lock on opposing tailbacks, leading UGA with 120 tackles in 1998.
Co-StarringOG Steve Herndon -- With Matt Stinchcomb and Chris Terry now patroling the NFL trenches, Herndon now is the anchor of the Dawgs' offensive line. DT Richard Seymour -- Second on the Bulldogs in sacks and fourth in tackles in '98. DE Adrian Hollingshed -- Moved from linebacker to end to take advantage of his pass-rushing skills.
And introducingLB Boss Bailey -- The Bulldogs go from a Champ to a Boss. This Bailey can pack a whallop.
Why it will workCarter explodes in his sophomore season and the Bulldogs find a consistent running back for the first time since Garrison Hearst left.
Why it won'tGeorgia still has to find a way to beat both Tennessee and Florida in the same season -- something it hasn't done since 1988.
