Bombs Away Hawaii ('98: 0-12; 0-8 WAC)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:56 PM
The plot
Hawaii hasn't been in this much trouble since Pearl Harbor. New coach June Jones brings an NFL resume but not much else to a program mired in an 18-game losing streak, the longest in Division I football. The Rainbow Warriors haven't won a road game in the WAC since 1992 (coincidentally, their last championship season) and they haven't won a road game at all in the past four seasons.
The directorJune Jones -- first season
StarringLB Matt Paul -- Impressive numbers (100 tackles last season) more a product of the paper-thin defensive line.QB Dan Robinson -- A veteran at 25, Robinson has proved himself against some of the best. He threw for 328 yards against Michigan last season.
Co-starringCB Anthony Smith -- A surprisingly good athlete, Smith gets to the play, leading the team last year in tackles (108).
Why it will workAs snow blankets Honolulu, the NCAA passes a controversial new system where by the national championship is only awarded to teams coached by men named after a month.
Why it won't workBad ... just bad.
