Atomic Train Michigan ('98: 10-3; 7-1 Big Ten)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:31 PM
The Plot
While this isn't the glitziest Wolverines unit on paper, its preseason parallels to the 1997 national title team are many. Back then it was Dreisbach or Griese; now it's Brady or Henson? The makings of another low-key but top-notch defense are there. But while that team had a stable in the offensive backfield, the burden of rushing -- and, most likely, the offense -- rest solely on the large shoulders of a man they call "A-train."
The DirectorLloyd Carr -- fifth season, 39-11
StarringRB Anthony Thomas - The A-train notched 5.3 yards a carry, 15 TDs in shared duty last year.DE James Hall - Dominant force down the stretch when UM held both Penn State and Wisconsin below 200 yards offense.
Co-starringLB Ian Gold - Capable inside linebacker who leads solid crew.T Jeff Backus -- Most talented of three juniors anchoring line. FB Aaron Shea - Converted tight end will see more pass-catching opportunities. WR Marcus Knight - New primary receiver must fill big shoes of Tai Streets.
And introducingWR David Terrell - Sophomore speedster will make presence known as receiver, returner and, maybe, defender.
Why it will workDefensive front seven is scary and either quarterback should do just fine.
Why it won'tQuestionable secondary and lack of a playmaker with the skill and experience of Streets.
