Bye bye, Corby Missouri ('98: 8-4, 5-3 Big 12)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:36 PM
The Plot
A funny thing happened on the way to Loserville: The Missouri Tigers actually managed to make two consecutive bowl appearances. But can the Tigers' exile from historic mediocrity last with three nobodies fighting to replace last year's best non-Michael Bishop quarterback? The defensive outlook is even less settled with most of the punch of last year's squad gone.
The DirectorLarry Smith -- fifth season, 26-30-1; 136-11-7 overall
StarringC Rob Riti -- Only Riti could keep coaches confident after losing four linemen from last season.DE Justin Smith -- Headlines the defensive front, the Tigers' strongest component in '99.
Co-starringWR Kent Layman -- The ultra-consistent senior brings experience to a young offense.RB DeVaughn Black -- With two touchdowns in the Black and Gold game, DeVaughn will have to be De man for the Tigers to go bowling for a third straight season. CB Carlos Posey -- What analysts call a big-play cornerback. Translated his 4.29 speed into three defensive touchdowns last season.
And introducing:WR Eric Spencer -- Mizzou's best spring surprise, Spencer owned the practice fields, catching a team-high 17 balls in the first two intra-squad scrimmages.
Why it will workSuccess breads success, and the Tigers have just enough talent to sneak up on people
Why it won'tLike Kansas State, there's simply too much youth -- but even worse than K-State, there's not a lot of talented youth, and definitely not a Corby in this bunch.
