Hail to the Chief NE Louisiana ('98: 5-6)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:36 PM
The Plot
Why should a program without a winning record since 1993 be booming with optimism? Perhaps because the new coach can remember being an assistant for the school's 1987 I-AA championship, and recently coached I-AA power McNeese State to the title game. He'll use his same recipe for success at I-A: run, run and run some more.
The DirectorBobby Keasler -- first season; 78-34-2 overall
Ensemble castQB Andre Vige - Started as redshirt frosh; now under tutelage of new QB coach/NE La. alum Stan Humphries.RB Mike Mitchell - Fifth-year senior won starting job in spring. CB Pat Dennis - Merits All-American consideration if he duplicates seven-INT performance.
And introducingRB Mark Henderson - With last year's top two rushers gone, the Arkansas transfer will vie for PT.
Why it will workProven coach and method (run!) has a couple good backs to work with.
Why it won'tMass personnel losses on both sides of ball from already mediocre team.
