New Jack City UNLV ('98: 0-11)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:37 PM
The Plot
There may be a new sheriff in town, but this is still a team coming off an 0-11 season in which it ranked a WAC-worst in total offense (255.27 YPG) and 14th in the former 16-team league in total defense (429.18). New head coach John Robinson recruited JUCOs to step in at QB, running back, wide receiver, and the defensive line, but despite showing promise for the future, the future is not now for the Rebs.
The DirectorJohn Robinson -- first year; 104-35-4 overall
StarringRB Jeremi Rudolph -- Besides Robinson, Rudolph is probably the biggest name to hit the program this season -- the JUCO transfer (Southwest Mississippi) originally signed with Florida State out of high school.
Co-starringLB James Sunia -- Freshman All-America selection in '98 returns as the team's leading tackler (115) and provides some stability in the changing times.
And introducingQB Jason Vaughan -- JUCOs will appear all over the field, especially on offenseTE/H-back Jermaine Curtis -- former prep teammate of Tennessee's Tee Martin WR Nate Turner -- This transfer from Middle Georgia College to lead the Rebs back from obscurity.
Why it will workRobinson's nine JUCOs are talented and probably upgraded the team significantly from the woeful outfit that lost its last 16 games.
Why it won'tWith all of the unfamiliar faces, the familiar losing may be a thing of the past, but it won't happen overnight.
