Awakenings New Mexico State ('98: 3-8, 1-4 Big West)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:38 PM
The Plot
Tony Samuel introduced a new look to Las Cruces when he arrived in 1997 -- the option. The offense should be a finely tuned unit with seven starters returning -- including the QB, three linemen, a wide receiver and tight end.
The DirectorTony Samuel -- third year, 5-17Ensemble castQB Ty Houghtaling -- Ran for 313 yards out of the option in '98 while passing for 1,820 yards -- his 2,133 total yards ranked third in the conference.DT Tim Englehardt -- All-Big West second-teamer needs to have a big year as the only returning starter on the line. And introducingRB Kenton Keith -- Much of what the Aggies are able to do this season will rely on how Keith is able to make up for the loss of Denvis Manns, who led the league in rushing as a senior last season. Why it will workThe option is a look not often seen in the Big West, and New Mexico State is lightly regarded in the conference ... they will pull an upset or two.Why it won'tToo much to ask of Keith to be the Manns so soon, and the Aggies defense -- which returns nine starters -- allowed a league-worst 291.3 yards passing in '98.Our critics' review** |
