Hungry Like the Wolf N.C. State (’98: 7-5, 5-3 ACC)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:39 PM The Plot
The Cardiac Pack had quite the season last year. Beat Florida State, lose to Baylor, beat Syracuse, get crushed by Georgia Tech. The Pack certainly was an enigma. But N.C. State saved Mike O'Cain's job with the school's first bowl bid since 1994, and with QB Jamie Barnette back chances are good that N.C. State will be bowling again this holiday season.
The DirectorMike O'Cain -- sixth season, 35-34 overall
StarringQB Jamie Barnette -- Most underrated signal caller in the conference, possibly the nation, could be ACC's top passer before he's done.CB Lloyd Harrison -- Loves to make the big pick, led ACC with seven last year.
Co-starringRB Rashon Spikes -- Sidelined last season by broken bone in shoulder.LB Edrick Smith -- Undersized middle linebacker led ACC freshmen with 94 tackles. P Scott Earwood -- What's not to love about a punter who kept kicking last year with a shin stress fracture? WR Chris Coleman -- Becomes Barnette's main target with Torry Holt departed for NFL.
And introducingWR Koren Robinson -- Tore up spring game after redshirting last fall. Why it will workBarnette keeps N.C. State in enough games with his arm, and Spikes is a workhorse carrying the ball. Why it won'tDefensive line is undersized and lacking experience, a bad combination.
