Starting Over Northwestern ('98: 3-9, 0-8 Big Ten)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:41 PM
The Plot
For a man who took their school to its first bowl game in half a century, Gary Barnett is remarkably un-missed in Evanston. There's salvation in finally knowing your coach will still be in town next week. Unfortunately for Walker, Barnett left quite a mess behind. Hardly any returnees from a 3-9 team carry great promise, and most of Barnett's vaunted post-Rose recruits have either fizzled out or left town, like starting '98 QB Gavin Hoffman.
The DirectorRandy Walker -- first season; 59-35-5 overall
StarringTE Jay Tant - Leading returning receiver (327 yards) has been part of Wildcats' offense for three years.WR Sam Simmons - One of the nation's leading kick returners (27.6 avg.) as a true frosh.
Co-starringDT Jeff Dyra - One of club's rare hopes for pass-rush success.SS Mycal Jones - Defense's best athlete will be utilized heavily.
And introducing:QB Zak Kustok - Notre Dame transfer becomes eligible in October.
Why it will workIf entire offense was mysteriously replaced by Ohio State's over offseason.
Why it won'tCan't expect a new quarterback and receivers, jumbled offensive backfield and rebuilt line to gel in a season.
