Sooner Swooner Oklahoma ('98: 5-6, 3-5 Big 12)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:43 PM
The Plot
Five years removed from its last bowl game, Oklahoma doesn't look like it's going to right this ship just yet. No quarterback and no explosive receivers are going to mean huge problems for first-year coach Bob Stoops' "pass-oriented" offense. The Sooners did rack up 415 aerial yards in the spring game, but the quarterback of the day won't have the luxury of playing against Oklahoma's defense.
The DirectorBob Stoops -- first season
Ensemble castCB Mike Woods -- One of the best pure covermen in the league -- 10 passes broken up last season.SS Ontei Jones As undersized (5'9", 191) as anybody who could make 117 tackles in one season. C Matt O'Neal -- Will ensure somebody gets the snap, as soon as Stoops figures out whom. OT Scott Kempenich -- All-Big 12 selection last year leads a line that returns all its starters.
Why it will workMaybe Stoops knows something we don't.
Why it won'tUntil the quarterback situation is resolved by a means other than default, and until the leading receiver catches more than 14 balls in a season, your New Year's plans are safe.
