Apocalypse Now Stanford ('98: 3-8, 2-6 Pac-10)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:57 PM
The Plot
The Cardinal took its lumps last season as an extremely young team, and hopefully that will pay off with 19 starters returning.
The DirectorTyrone Willingham -- fifth year, 22-23-1
StarringQB Todd Husak -- Only Cade McNown and Akili Smith put up better numbers in league.WR DeRonnie Pitts -- Led team with 74 catches for 1,012 yards last last season. SS Tim Smith -- You know your defense is suspect when your leading tackler is a safety. WR Troy Walters -- Will graduate with most of Stanford's career receiving records.
Co-starringWR Dave Davis -- Combined with Pitts and Walters for 2,599 of team's 3,516 receiving yards.DT Willie Howard -- One of the most athletic 290-pounders around. LB Riall Johnson -- Leading sacker moved from DE to up position.
And introducingRB Kerry Carter -- 225-pound Canadian freshman should help improve pathetic (75.5 yards per game) ground attack.
Why it will workThe passing game is as good as any in the country, and the defense is not without talent; perhaps new defensive coordinator Kent Bauer will help. Why it won'tStanford had the best passing offense in the league but the worst rushing offense. Unless it finds a tailback teams will continue to only defend the pass.
