A Lone Star Texas ('98: 9-3, 6-2 Big 12)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 06:01 PM
The Plot
Year One, After Ricky: A backfield seemingly in need is actually pretty darn good. Sophomore QB Major Applewhite could be the star of stars in the Big 12 this season. Bomb squad partner Kwame Cavil will do what he can to beef up Applewhite's stats. The No. 1 recruiting class will have spots to fill -- the offensive line lost four starters and nobody has ever called this Linebacker U.
The DirectorMack Brown -- second season, 9-3; 95-77-1 overall
StarringQB Major Applewhite -- Sir, yes sir, the best quarterback in the league.WR Kwame Cavil -- Made 51 catches last season as a complimentary threat. DE Aaron Humphrey -- His 10 sacks last season were more than the entire Kansas defense.
Co-starringLB De'Andre Lewis -- Speedy middle 'backer simply has a nose for the ball: 33 assisted tackles last season.FS Quentin Jammer -- The only starter returning to the first-string secondary logged 10 pbu's last season.
And introducingQB Chris Simms -- The nation's best-known recruit is waiting in the wings if Applewhite stubs a toe.Why it will workSolid returning defense coupled with an explosive, if inexperienced, offense means a lot of worries for opposing coaches.
Why it won't workOpponents can take advantage of four new faces on the offensive line and rattle Applewhite's effectiveness.
