Aggie-ravated Texas A&M ('98: 11-3, 8-1 Big 12)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 06:02 PM
The Plot
Quick question for non-Aggie fans: Who was the best team in the Big 12 last season? If you answered Kansas State, then you can understand where the motivation in '99 is coming from. With just six starters lost from last year's team, '99 could well be another Year of the Aggie in the Big 12. No Dat Ngyuen in the middle, but the Wrecking Crew is still alive and well.
The DirectorR.C. Slocum -- 10th season, 94-28-2StarringTB Dante Hall -- The offense turns on the swivel of his hip. Eight yards against Texas led to the only Big 12 defeat; 113 against K-State took the Aggies to the title.QB Randy McCown -- Almost has Cade McNown's last name; almost has Cade McNown's ability. FB Ja'Mar Toombs -- Blocking isn't the word; flattening is more apropos for this sledgehammer of a fullback. Co-starringLB Cornelius Anthony -- No. 1 reason quarterbacks don't want to visit Kyle Field.LB Roylin Bradley -- Reason No. 2. The tandem combined for 12 sacks last season. P Shane Lechler -- The Big 12's best weapon in the field-position battle averaged 43.6 yards a punt last season.
Why it will workMotivation, talent, this group has all the right requirements for a championship contender. Why it won'tLack of a deep threat means defenses can key on Hall.
