The Name's the Thing Texas Tech ('98: 7-5, 4-4 Big 12)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 06:04 PM
The Plot
From the school of "Sometimes the best defense is a good offense" come the '99 Red Raiders. They're loaded on offense, with a preseason Heisman contender in Ricky Williams and last year's season-ending standout Derek Dorris, but the defensive side is a sieve after being hard hit by departures.
The DirectorSpike Dykes -- 12th season, 76-62-2
StarringRB Ricky Williams -- Now the one and only Ricky; if the defense can keep the Raiders close, Williams can finish the job.DE Taurus Rucker -- How do you replace an All-America? Ask Rucker at the end of the season.
Co-starringQB Rob Peters -- Solid, if unspectacular, Roberts is the show when the ball is not in Williams' hands.OG Curtis Lowery -- The biggest reason Ricky Williams will rush for 1,500 yards this season. CB Oscar Solis -- Walk-on turned standout picked off two of Tech's four interceptions last year.
Why it will workRicky, Ricky, Ricky! As much hype as substance (if that's possible), Williams can single-handedly lift his team to victory.
Why it won'tYou can't outscore a team you can't stop.
