The Plot

The Road to BCS Payday The Rockets are the MAC's winningest program of the '90s and have played in both title games thus far, but the decade's final season could fall short of such lore. Gone are two of the most successful quarterbacks and running backs in school history and last year's leading receiver. A heavily fortified defense, though, should keep Toledo in the mix among the league's upper echelon.

The Director

Gary Pinkel ninth season, 57-31-3

Starring

LB Jason Lamar -- Defensive-player-of-the-year candidate coming off 119-tackle season.
DE DeJaun Goode -- Notched six sacks during breakthrough sophomore year.

Co-starring

T Colin Westrich -- Sixth-year senior was All-MAC performer in '98.
RB Chester Taylor -- Junior expected to follow fine in lofty footsteps of Wasean Tait.

And introducing

QB Dan Cole -- Junior has unenviable task of replacing Rockets star Chris Wallace.

Why it will work

Should have formidable defense, and replacements at skill positions appear to be capable.

Why it won't

If Cole and backup Tavares Borden struggle behind center.
