Hurricane Damon Tulsa ('98: 4-7; 2-6 WAC)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 06:08 PM
The plot
Can a team go all season without putting the ball on the ground? Dave Rader, who hasn't had a winning season since 1991, will once again give his rushing attack the cold shoulder. But he's got a stockpile of receivers and the best quarterback prospect in the league in Josh Blankenship to keep the Golden Hurricane exciting, if not victorious.
The directorDave Rader -- 12th season, 48-74-1
StarringWR Damon Savage -- Preseason All-WAC honoree cracked 1,000 yards receiving as a sophomore.QB Jerrold Smith -- Led the top-rated pass offense in the WAC last season (averaging 212.1 yards per game).
Co-starringCB Todd Franz -- Leads a defense that last season finished a surprising 13th in the nation in pass defense.
And introducingQB Josh Blankenship -- Homegrown talent at Tulsa Union High was Oklahoma's player of the year as a senior in high school. He might not get the position this year, but he'll carry the mantle in the future.
Why it will workLike San Jose State, Tulsa has a group of three winnable in-conference games and stranger things have happened than an explosive offense getting lucky a few times during the season.
Why it won't workIt hasn't worked for eight seasons, but apparently that's just a transition period in Tulsa.
