The Plot

The Road to BCS Payday

Team with national-title hopes exposed at the end of 1998 for having a ridiculously porous defense. With all-world quarterback Cade McNown in the NFL, that D will have to prove that older also means better if the Bruins are to maintain a top-10 ranking. The rest of the skill positions are set with talented receivers and runners.

The Director

Bob Toledo -- fourth year, 25-10; 54-46 overall

Starring

WR Danny Farmer -- Volleyball star should find NFL more lucrative.
RB DeShaun Foster -- Bruiser led team in rushing as true freshman.
RB Jermaine Lewis -- Scatback started nine times in '98 and scored 13 TDs.

Co-starring

WR Brian Poli-Dixon -- The other half of a twin-tower receiving duo.
CB/KR Ryan Roques -- Tough corner averaged 12.5 yards on punt returns.
LB Ryan Nece -- Great speed and playmaking ability.

And introducing

WR Freddie Mitchell -- Broke leg in Game 2 last season; watch him flourish.

Why it will work

Despite loss of McNown, Toledo's offense is as innovative and explosive as any in the country.

Why it won't

Whoever emerges as starting QB can't handle the job; defense fails to show improvement.
