The Plot

The Road to BCS Payday

One year after after Wake Forest choked on high expectations, there is little to no chance of that happening again any time soon. A defense that was porous last season, giving up an average of more than 40 points per game over the last five games, could be even worse this year. The only bright spot for the Deacs is freshman quarterback C.J. Leak, who spurned Notre Dame among others to sign on with Wake Forest. But his presence alone might not be enough to save Jim Caldwell's job.

The Director

Jim Caldwell -- sixth season, 17-49 overall

Starring

DE Matt Petz -- Had six sacks last year after injuries forced him into action.

Co-starring

WR Jammie Deese -- Actually overshadowed Wake star Desmond Clark last year with 68 receptions.
FS DeLawn Parrish -- Led team in tackles.
RB Kito Gary -- Currently the starter at tailback, you don't get many carries when you're playing catchup.
G Sam Settar -- One of two offensive lineman to play every snap last season.

And introducing

QB C.J. Leak -- Heralded recruit may not start right away, but will get plenty of playing time.

Why it will work

A weak out of conference schedule and Caldwell will be calling the plays himself this year.

Why it won't

No matter how good Caldwell's play-calling skills may be, he still has one of the worst defenses in the country.
