The Plot

The Road to BCS Payday Last season was supposed to be a rebuilding year coming off a Rose Bowl appearance, and the Cougars hope 1998's struggles pay off in 1999.

The Director

Mike Price -- 11th year, 56-57; 103-101 overall

Starring

WR Leaford Hackett -- Slot receiver finished just behind Taylor with 44 receptions.
WR Nian Taylor -- Led team with 45 catches for 18.8-yard average.
S Lamont Thompson -- Cougars' only returning All-Pac-10 performer.

Co-starring

QB Steve Birnbaum -- First choice as Ryan Leaf's replacement was inconsistent.
QB Jason Gesser -- Impressive, mobile redshirt freshman failed to assert himself in spring.
QB Paul Mencke -- Teamed with Birnbaum to throw 25 interceptions in 1998.

And introducing

WR Milton Wynn -- Juco transfer may force his way into starting lineup.

Why it will work

Washington State is the Pac-10's best quarterback school and surely Price will find a way to groom a starter. Eighteen starters return, hopefully a year wiser.

Why it won't

Uncertainty at the quarterback position won't be helped by the loss of 1,000-yard rusher Kevin Brown, who was booted off the team for off-field problems.
