Life is Beautiful Wisconsin ('98: 11-1, 7-1 Big Ten)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 06:21 PM
The Plot
They won the Granddaddy of 'em all, their superstar running back is back for a fourth year and most of their superb defense is young enough to still get better. So what could possibly keep the Badgers from repeating? Well, very little, though having to start a new quarterback (senior Scott Kavanagh) for the first time in 37 games will be the biggest factor.
The DirectorBarry Alvarez -- 10th season, 60-42-4
StarringRB Ron Dayne - The last time Dayne stayed completely injury free was his freshman year, when he ran for 2,109 yards and 21 TDs.T Chris McIntosh - Giant Aaron Gibson is gone, but McIntosh stands a modest 6-7, 307. CB Jamar Fletcher - Led the nation in interceptions (seven) as a frosh, including a game-saver in the Rose Bowl.
Co-starringDE John Favret - Two-year starter and chief pass rusher with Tom Burke's departure.LB Chris Ghidorzi -- Leading tackler (109) behind Burke last year. FS Jason Doering - Roams the field looking to pop an unsuspecting receiver. P Kevin Stemke - Conference's best leg put 17 inside the 20 last year.
And introducingDE Wendell Bryant - Sophomore showed glimpses of stardom on late-game sack of Cade McNown in Rose Bowl.
Why it will workDayne is nearly unstoppable and the Wisconsin defense is obviously one of the game's best.
Why it won'tOnce his biggest critics, Badgers fans will dearly miss Mike Samuel and his 27-11 tenure as starting QB.
