Pump Up the Volume Wyoming ('98: 8-3)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 06:22 PM
The Plot
While the Cowboys gave up more points than they scored in their last WAC season (165 scored, 171 allowed), offensively they are more experienced -- and, thanks to coach Dana Dimel, higher-octane -- than last season's low-wattage attack. The defense is also on the rise, with many veterans returning.
The DirectorDana Dimel -- 3rd year, 16-8StarringQB Jay Stoner -- Threw for 2,373 yards and 11 TDs as a sophomore in '98 -- and has three of his top targets back.
Co-starringWR Wendell Montgomery -- Ranked second in the WAC with 789 receiving yards (only 10 behind leader Daniel Jones), but will need to find the end zone this season -- after going oh-fer in '98 -- for the Cowboys to have a chance.S Al Rich -- Leader in the secondary is considered by Dimel as the best safety in the conference.
Why it will workA solid defense is almost a given, and Dimel plans on spreading the field more often while relying on big plays between his maturing QB and veteran receivers.
Why it won'tBig-play offenses are risky, and if things don't go as planned, returning to an attack that looks like last season's -- which ranked 12th in the WAC in scoring offense -- could mean a .500 season or worse.
