This former walk-on is the epitome of team player, a senior who is willing to do whatever is asked of him for the common good. And in 1998, former coach Jim Lambright called his name often.
Forget Kordell Stewart; Jarzynka is the ultimate Slash, perhaps the most versatile player to grace Division I-A football in some time. Though primarily a receiver (he is listed as a second-teamer entering the fall), Jarzynka is also Washington's best kick returner, and last season was the Huskies' placekicker, too.
Jarzynka led the Huskies with 849 all-purpose yards. The breakdown: 26 yards rushing (four carries); 92 yards receiving (11 catches, one TD); 402 yards on punt returns (45 attempts, one TD); and 329 yards on kickoff returns (16 attempts).
As a kicker he made 6 of 8 field-goal attempts, converting both tries between 40 and 49 yards (long of 44), and hit 19 of 22 extra points. And if that's not enough, he also had two tackles on special teams.
But Jarzynka's role, in one sense, will be reduced this fall; he is expected to relinquish kicking duties to concentrate on his role as a return man. That does not necessarily mean, however, any less time on the field or any fewer contributions. He should still see plenty of time in new coach Rick Neuheisel's high-octane passing game.
And if injuries or poor performances leave a hole that needs to be filled, no doubt Jarzynka will be the one to do it.
