TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- All-America kicker Sebastian Janikowski hit a 41-yard field goal for the only scoring in Florida State's final spring scrimmage Saturday, giving the Gold a 3-0 win over the Garnet.

Janikowski also put on a show between periods, kicking field goals of 57, 62 and 65 yards.

"I wish he had tried one from 70," coach Bobby Bowden said. "I would have liked to see if he could make that."

Saturday's scrimmage before an estimated 10,000 fans was marked by defense, just as most of the competition was during the spring.

Quarterbacks Marcus Outzen and Jared Jones played with both teams, but neither enjoyed much time to throw or room to run. Outzen completed five of 17 passes for 69 yards and two interceptions, while Jones went just 2-for-13 for 12 yards and also was picked off twice.

Jamal Reynolds, who won FSU's Hinesman Award as the most dominating player of the spring, had two sacks along with fellow defensive ends Roland Seymour and Chris Walker.

Defensive backs Clevan Thomas, Abdual Howard, Chris Hope and linebacker Bradley Jennings each had interceptions. Howard's saved a touchdown in the first quarter.

Jeff Chaney, moved from fullback to tailback when starter Travis Minor sat out with an injured shoulder, led both teams with 38 yards rushing on seven carries.

Despite his injury, Minor was named the spring's most valuable offensive player. Reynolds won the same honors on defense.

Florida State, which lost last season's national championship game to Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl, opens its 1999 schedule Aug. 28 against Louisiana Tech.
