TCU safety LaVar Veale (11) was victimized on Southern Miss' winning touchdown. AP

Just for kicks

Eagles avenge missed FGs, downs TCU on late TD pass

Most of the night, the Mobile Alabama Bowl and its four punt or kick blocks could only be described as ugly. But the deciding play was unmistakable beauty. Eagles QB Jeff Kelly connected with Kenneth Johnson for a 29-yard touchdown pass in the final eight seconds to stun LaDainian Tomlinson and 13th-ranked TCU 28-21.

Record: 7-4, 4-3 C-USA
Jeff Bower (10th season, 66-47-1)
Key players:
QB Jeff Kelly (2,381 yards, 15 TDs), RB Dawayne Woods (631 yards), DE Cedric Scott (65 tackles, 12 sacks)
Season summary:
The Eagles seemed to peak in September, back when they nearly beat Tennessee and did beat Alabama and Oklahoma State. But following a 56-24 win over Tulane, things started to fall apart. And soon enough, USM was losing three of its final four to fall from C-USA title contention. One culprit was the normally rock-solid defense, but an injury to workhorse running back Derrick Nix didn't help.

Record: 10-1, 7-1 WAC
Key players:
RB LaDainian Tomlinson (2,158 yards, 22 TDs), QB Casey Printers (156.8 efficiency), DE Aaron Schobel (14 tackles-for-loss)
Season summary:
How good are the Horned Frogs? Good enough to earn former coach Dennis Franchione a $1.4 million deal from fabled Alabama. The Frogs must press on without their architect, but still with their all-time rushing leader Tomlinson and one of the nation's finest defenses. Among its conquests, TCU demolished Big Ten co-champ Northwestern 41-14 and crushed UTEP to snag the WAC title. If not for a mysterious loss at San Jose State, the Frogs would be playing in the BCS.
