As usual, Marshall victorious in Motor City

They played another Motor City Bowl, and Marshall won. What, you expected something different? The Thundering Herd have owned the bowl in recent years, and continued their roll with a 25-14 victory over Cincinnati. It was Marshall's third consecutive win in the Pontiac Silverdome.

Record: 7-4, 5-2 C-USA
Coach:
Rick Minter (seventh season, 34-43-1)
Key players:
WR Antonio Chatman (1,257 all-purpose yards), LB Troy Evans (105 tackles), K Jonathon Ruffin (26-of-29 FGs)
Season summary:
The Bearcats had shown flashes of greatness in the past, including last year's upset of Wisconsin, but finally put it all together in 2000. Athletic QB Deontey Kenner didn't have his best year statistically but didn't have to because of the players around him, like all-conference RB Ray Jackson and Chatman. The defense played especially well during league play, led not only by Evans but veterans like DT Mario Monds and safety DeJuan Gossett.

Record: 7-5, 6-3 MAC
Coach:
Bob Pruett (fifth season, 57-9)
Key players:
QB Byron Leftwich (3,358 yards, 21 TDs), WR Nate Poole (70 catches, 818 yards), LB Max Yates (111 tackles)
Season summary:
It was a "rebuilding year" for the Herd, considering their recent dominance, and yet Marshall still won its fourth consecutive MAC championship. Leftwich emerged as a capable replacement for Chad Pennington. The problem for much of the early season was defense, especially in blowout losses to Toledo and Western Michigan, but it came around in time for the Broncos rematch.
