Retiring West Virginia coach Don Nehlen reacts to an official's call as he team held on for a 49-38 victory. AP

End of an era

Nehlen's career, WVU's bowl skid draw to close

After 30 years as a head coach, it's rare for Don Nehlen to have a new experience on the sideline. But West Virginia's coach got one in the final game of his career, watching his Mountaineers hold off a frenetic late charge from Ole Miss before winning 49-38 in the Music City Bowl. The victory snapped West Virginia's eight-game bowl losing streak, which dated to 1984.

Record: 6-5, 3-4 Big East
Coach:
Don Nehlen (21st season, 148-93-4; 201-128-8 overall)
Key players:
RB Avon Cobourne (893 yards) WR Khori Ivy (17.2 yards)
Season summary:
The Mountaineers would like to send the retiring Nehlen out a winner by ending his notorious bowl jinx (eight consecutive postseason losses). Injuries kept WVU from becoming eligible more convincingly. With the possible exception of an opening win over Boston College, the Mountaineers beat the teams they're supposed to (Temple, Idaho etc.), lost to those they weren't (Miami, Notre Dame etc.) But QB Brad Lewis leads a potentially dangerous offense when everyone's healthy.

Record: 7-4, 4-4 SEC
Coach:
David Cutcliffe (second season, 16-8)
Key players:
RB Deuce McAllister (17 TDs), QB Romaro Miller (2,012 yards, 18 TDs), DE Derrick Burgess (60 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 2 INTs)
Season summary:
A summer of hype surrounding McAllister's Heisman candidacy and the Rebels' New Year's bowl aspirations were quickly dashed when the Rebs fell 35-27 to Auburn in the second week. Injuries kept McAllister from flashing his previous form, which had catapulted him to the top of next year's NFL Draft lists. But Ole Miss fans did get to end the season on a high following their team's 45-30 Egg Bowl victory over Mississippi State, a game in which McAllister rebounded with 121 yards.
