COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Academic problems will keep Ohio State wide receiver Reggie Germany from playing in the Outback Bowl, athletics director Andy Geiger said Wednesday.

Geiger would not provide details of the problems. The Columbus Dispatch reported that Germany is being penalized for missing classes.

Germany, a senior, was the team's second leading receiver this year with 22 catches. He missed the final regular-season game against Michigan because of a leg injury.

Ohio State will play South Carolina in the game Jan. 1 in Tampa, Fla.

The Dispatch said Germany's likely replacement in the starting lineup is senior Vanness Provitt, who had a career-high six catches against Michigan in his first start.
