AMES, Iowa (AP) -- The official Iowa State entourage, from players and coaches to administrators and guests, will number 571 people for the Cyclones' trip to the Insight.com Bowl.

The team and coaches left Friday on a charter flight for Phoenix, where they will face Pittsburgh next Thursday.

It is the Cyclones' first bowl game in 22 years, and the invitation list for the travel party is a lengthy one:

  • Football team: 131 players.

  • Athletic staff: 129 people, including 18 coaches; 27 people involved in media relations, tickets, dietary services, clerical support, administration and broadcasting; 45 student managers, trainers and video operators; 39 spouses and family members.

  • Marching band: 262 members and five administrators.

  • University administration: 20, including nine administrators, staff and faculty representatives; nine spouses and guests; and the student body president and vice president.

  • Cheerleaders, pompon squad and mascots: 22 students and two coaches.

"The public might go, 'Oh my gosh, 500 people,'" said Murray Blackwelder, ISU's vice president for external relations. "This is not a lot compared to many schools."

He said Minnesota sent 700 people to Sun Bowl last season.

Iowa State will receive $925,000 from the Big 12 Conference for the trip, and Blackwelder said the school will likely use most -- if not all -- of the money.

"I hope we don't, but we might," he said. "We're definitely going to try to live within that budget."
