Georgia's Terrence Edwards looks for room as Virginia defender Shernard Newby gives chase. AP

Donnan demolition

Georgia whips Virginia in coaches' final games

The fired Jim Donnan got some final redemption, while the retiring George Welsh leaves with a bitter taste in his mouth. Behind nearly 200 yards from receiver Terrence Edwards, Donnan's Georgia Bulldogs clobbered Welsh's Virginia Cavaliers 37-14 before a nearly empty stadium on Christmas Eve.

Roster

Record: 7-4, 5-3 SEC
Coach:
Jim Donnan (fifth season, 39-19; 103-40 overall)
Key players:
WR Terence Edwards (53 catches, 704 yards)CB Tim Wansley (6 INTs), DT Richard Seymour (10.5 tackles-for-loss)
Season summary:
In what's becoming a familiar scene in Athens, the Bulldogs started 6-1, then lost three of their final four, to nine-win clubs Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech. While Georgia's defense was stifling at times, the offense struggled most of the season. Three-year starter Quincy Carter missed four of the last five games with injuries and was ineffective when healthy. Cory Philips is a decent passer, but freshman Musa Smith is the only promising back in a corps of inconsistent runners.

Roster

Record: 6-5, 5-3 ACC
Coach:
George Welsh (19th season, 134-85-3; 189-131-4 overall)
Key players:
RB Antwoine Womack (1,028 yards, 9 TDs), QB Dan Ellis (55.2 percent completions, 1,642 yards), LB Byron Thweatt (121 tackles)
Season summary:
Virginia is certainly not the world's flashiest team. And its defense often gives reason for concern. Yet Welsh has his troops in position to attain seven wins for a 14th consecutive season. The offense, led by Ellis and Womack, avoids mistakes. If Ellis falters, look for backup Byron Spinner, who led the Cavs to the victory over N.C. State that made them bowl eligble.
