Purdue linebacker Joe Odom manages to wrap up elusive Huskies quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo. AP

Inspired performance

Boosted by teammate's presence, Huskies handle Purdue

The Washington Huskies had all the motivation they needed before the Rose Bowl kicked off. Teammate Curtis Williams, who was left paralyzed after a hit against Stanford this season, made the trip to Pasadena and met with the team prior to the game. The emotion of seeing Williams carried over onto the field, as the Huskies jumped on Purdue early and pounded away until the end, eventually winning 34-24.

Roster

Record: 8-3, 6-2 Big Ten
Coach:
Joe Tiller (fourth season, 33-15, 72-45-1 overall)
Key players:
QB Drew Brees (60.5 percent completions, 3,393 yards), RB Montrell Lowe (919 yards), WR Vinny Sutherland (926 yards, 11 TDs), S Stuart Schweigert (15 pass break-ups)
Season summary:
A program that hadn't been to a bowl in 13 years is in its fourth in four years under Tiller, this one the Granddady of them All. While third-year starter Brees is still the undisputed face of the Boilermakers, Purdue has become a much more complete team this season, running more often behind Lowe and pushing its defense into the upper third of the Big Ten. Criticized coming into the season for his failure to win big games, Tiller's squad knocked off both Michigan and Ohio State this year.

Record: 10-1, 7-1 Pac-10
Coach:
Rick Neuheisel (second season, 17-6 ; 50-20 overall)
Key players:
QB Marques Tuiasosopo (2,540 total yards, 20 TDs), TE Jerramy Stevens (600 yards, 14.0 per catch), DT Larry Triplett, (11 tackles-for-loss), S Hakim Akbar (97 tackles)
Season summary:
It seemed that every week, the Huskies found some new, last-second, come-from-behind way to win. In fact, Washington won seven games by a touchdown or less. Its most impressive victory came early, on Sept. 9 over Miami, handing the Hurricanes their only loss. The Huskies' lone setback was three weeks later at Oregon. Tuiasosopo leads a solid if unspectacular ground-based offense, while their aggressive defense causes turnovers and the special teams make plays.
