Vinny Sutherland The elusive Vinny Sutherland is a favorite target of Purdue QB Drew Brees. Harry How/Allsport

Purdue wide receiver Vinny Sutherland vs. Washington free safety Greg Carothers

They may not see each other on every play, but Sutherland and Carothers represent the key question to the Rose Bowl: whether a Huskies secondary that relies heavily on freshmen can keep the Boilermakers receivers in check. Five freshmen play a lot in the Washington defensive backfield.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Carothers played so well early in the year on special teams and as a backup that he started the last three games of the season. His predecessor, All-Pac-10 junior Hakim Akbar, was moved to strong safety. Carothers led Washington freshmen with 27 tackles.

Sutherland is a nightmare for an inexperienced defensive back. At 5-foot-9, 191 pounds, he isn't going to overpower anyone. But he's quick and he's smart, which will spell trouble for the easily fooled. That's how he was able to catch 65 passes for 926 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Huskies win with ball control. To get the ball back from the Boilermakers, Washington must have its young secondary come through.
