Air Force wide receiver Brian LaBasco leaves the Fresno State defense behind. AP

New Year's gift

Air Force survives after Bulldogs botch fake field goal

From the beginning, Air Force dominated, rolling up a seemingly insurmountable 34-7 halftime lead. But Fresno State came back, cutting the deficit to 37-34 and driving downfield as the clock wound down. The Bulldogs had a chance to send it to OT, but they faked a 33-yard field goal attempt with seconds remaining, going for the win. It didn't work, giving Air Force the victory.

Record: 8-3, 5-2 Mountain West
Coach:
Fisher DeBerry (17th season, 136-70-1)
Key players:
QB Mike Thiessen (2,371 total yards, 23 TDs), WR Ryan Fleming (930 yards, 17.9 per catch), LB C.J. Zanotti (13 tackles-for-loss)
Season summary:
While not entirely abandoning DeBerry's traditional wishbone attack, Thiessen was allowed to open things up a bit more than usual, allowing him to show off unexpected arm strength and take advantage of the athletic Fleming. The Falcons may not have been the league's most consistent team, beating teams like BYU and Colorado State while falling to New Mexico and UNLV, but the eight wins still measured up to DeBerry's usual standards.

Record: 7-4, 6-2 WAC
Coach:
Pat Hill (third season, 18-16)
Key players:
QB David Carr (61.4 percent completions, 2,338 yards), LB Orlando Huff (10 sacks), LB Tim Skipper (91 tackles)
Season summary:
A 37-6 demolition of San Jose State sent the Bulldogs back to bowl season. This despite losing prolific passer Billy Volek after last season. Carr was a decent replacement, but it's Fresno's aggressive defense that really charges the team. They showed their mettle early, nearly knocking off UCLA before falling 24-21, and closed the season winning four of five.
