Ken Dorsey and the Hurricanes outscored the Gators 24-10 in the second half. AP

Hurricanes stake claim

The Miami Hurricanes didn't let college football's powers that be off the hook Tuesday night. Given the opportunity to throw a wrench into the BCS system, the Hurricanes did just that, whipping Florida 37-20 in the Sugar Bowl. That means a Florida State victory over No. 1 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Wednesday would leave six teams with one loss at the end of the season and raise the possibility of a split title between the Hurricanes and Seminoles.

Record: 10-2, 8-1 SEC
Coach:
Steve Spurrier (11th season, 112-24-1; 132-37-2 overall)
Key players:
QB Rex Grossman (61.8 percent completions, 21 TDs), WR Jabar Gaffney (1,184 yards, 14 TDs), DE Alex Brown (11.5 tackles-for-loss), CB Lito Sheppard (6 INTs, 179 yards)
Season summary:
The Gators were extremely young, but that didn't keep them from winning another SEC ring. Florida recovered from an early swoon and loss to Mississippi State to start rolling once the redshirt freshman Grossman took over primary QB duties. He also found a favorite target in freshman All-American Gaffney. Florida's youth on defense did get exploited in a 30-7 loss to rival Florida State, but it recovered in time to whip Auburn in the SEC championship game.

Record: 10-1, 7-0 Big East
Coach:
Butch Davis (sixth season, 40-20)
Key players:
WR Santana Moss (1,604 all-purpose yards), QB Ken Dorsey (2,737 yards, 25 TDs), RB James Jackson (1,006 yards, 11 TDs), LB Dan Morgan (136 tackles).
Season summary:
The Hurricanes didn't seem a national title contender when they fell at Washington in their second game. Things changed when, thanks to Dorsey's coming-out game, they knocked off defending champ Florida State on Oct. 7. The Seminoles are playing in the true championship game, but UM can still claim a piece of the prize. Especially if they keep playing like they have of late, demolishing good teams like Virginia Tech behind an exceptionally athletic offense and unmatched secondary.
