Air Force Falcons

Due for a solid season

  College Football: The New Century

'99: 6-5, 2-5 Mountain West

Coach

Fisher DeBerry (17th season, 126-69-1)

Key offensive players

Mike Thiessen, QB, Sr.
Baseball shortstop needs to keep improving and, above all, stay healthy.

Scotty McKay, RB, Sr.
Versatile halfback -- he also returns kicks -- is among three solid returners behind Thiessen.

Qualario Brown, RB, Sr.
Explosive runner is back after injury ruined his '99 season.

Key defensive players

Matt Pommer, LB, Sr.
Led the Falcons with 78 tackles last season.

Ivan Maisel's Player of the Century: Chad Hennings, DT, 1984-87
"How did someone that big ever fit in a jet cockpit? Won the '87 Outland Trophy."

Brightest Moment: Whipping Washington 45-25 in the 1998 Oahu Bowl to put the finishing touch on a 12-1 season -- the best record in school history. The Falcons ended the season ranked 13th in the AP Top 25, and 10th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.

Lowest Moment: After losing six games by four points or fewer in 1974, the Falcons traveled to Notre Dame and lost the season finale 38-0. It was the first shutout loss in a school-record 72 games dating to 1968, and capped a 2-9 season -- the worst record in Air Force history -- under coach Ben Martin.

C.J. Zanotti, LB, Sr.
Missed last season with injury after leading the 12-1 team in '98.

Key newcomer

Keith Boyea, QB, Junior Missed last season for disciplinary reasons, but figures to be quality backup to Thiessen.

Throwback player

Defensive tackle Kyle Allen missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, but returns this season looking like he might become a force like departed Shawn Thomas.

21st century player

He might not seem too "new-age" since the Falcons always have somebody like him in their offense, but halfback Scotty McKay does everything. He is the team's leading returning rusher, pass-catcher and kick and punt returner -- and he's only 5-foot-8.

Fast fact

The Falcons have had only two losing seasons under Coach Fisher DeBerry, and have won the Commander-in-Chief's trophy 13 times in its 27 seasons of existence.

Outlook

History shows that the Falcons never have two bad seasons in a row, although they will be trying to rebound this year with a new offensive coordinator and a specific coordinator for the special teams. It might not be that hard, as long as they don't get hurt the way they did last year. Quarterbacks coach Chuck Peterson was promoted to call plays after Bob Noblitt retired, and he has been at Air Force for more than a decade. Longtime assistant Tom Miller will handle the special teams, which have always been a Falcon trademark. The biggest key will be avoiding injury, which decimated the defense last year.
