Kent State Golden Flashes

Slowly making progress under Pees

  College Football: The New Century

'99: 2-9, 2-6

Coach

Dean Pees (third season, 2-20)

Key offensive players

Jason Hupp, OL, Sr.
Will start at left guard for the third straight season.

Juroon Kelly, WR, Jr.
Made 38 receptions for 355 yards and three touchdowns in 1999.

Chante Murphy, RB, Jr.
Seventh in the MAC in 1999 with 676 yards rushing.

Key defensive players

Rashan Hall, LB, Jr.
The MAC's leading returner in tackles made 125 last year.

Ivan Maisel's Player of the Century: Jack Lambert, LB, 1971-73
"Two-time All-MAC star who, under coach Don James, merely became one of the greatest NFL players ever."

Brightest Moment: Winning the 1972 Mid-American Conference championship behind the play of future Pro Football Hall of Famer Lambert.

Lowest Moment: Having only one winning season -- 7-4 in 1987 -- in the last 22 years.

Key newcomer

Adam Frederick, QB, RFr.
The signal-caller played high school ball at Pittsburghıs Shadyside Academy. He was an all-state selection his senior year.

Throwback player

Sophomore defensive tackle Roy Attieh oozes with potential. He didn't make a lot of plays as a freshman in 1999, but managed to have some key plays.

21st century player

Junior wide receiver Jurron Kelly is only 6-0, 165, but is not afraid to go across the middle and make the tough catch in traffic.

Fast fact

The Flashes return 15 of 22 starters and finished spring practice with a two-deep roster of only nine seniors.

Outlook

There were flashes of brilliance from the offense last year and the defense should be improved in 2000. The running game should be improved if RB DeMario Rozier remains healthy. The defense should be OK, but it wonıt matter if the offense can't produce. Still, it seems that progress is being made at Kent.
