Fantastic freshman

The future looks bright at Texas A&M as freshman Byron Jones starred for the Aggies en route to a 28-9 win over TCU in the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl in Houston. Jones picked off three passes in his first college start. In all, the Aggies defense recorded six sacks and four interceptions. Texas A&M won its 24th in a row over TCU, although the two teams haven't played each other since the demise of the Southwest Conference in 1995.

Record: 7-4, 4-4 Big 12 (T3rd in South)
Coach: R.C. Slocum (13th season)
Key players: QB Mark Farris (58.5 percent completions, 2,094 yards), LB Terrence Kiel (92 tackles), CB Sammy Davis (74 tackles, 5 interceptions)
Season summary: The Aggies started out sluggishly, struggling to fend off I-AA McNeese State and Wyoming, then looked like gangbusters in routing Notre Dame and winning seven of their first eight games. But the season ended on a down note, with consecutive losses to Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Texas in which A&M scored zero, 10 and seven points, respectively. The Tech game was particularly ugly, with fans of both schools engaging in a postgame brawl.

Record: 6-5, 4-3 Conference USA (T5th in league)
Coach: Gary Patterson (first season)
Key players: WR Adrian Madise (819 yards, 506 in last four games), QB Casey Printers (13 TDs, 8 INTs), LB LaMarcus McDonald (26 tackles for loss)
Season summary: The Horned Frogs struggled through most of their first year post-LaDainian Tomlinson and Dennis Franchione, the low point coming in a 48-22 demolition by an otherwise lousy Tulane team. But TCU turned things around just in time, taking a 4-5 record – with all four wins against lightweights -- into a matchup with then-10-1 Louisville and stomping the Cardinals 37-22. Needing one more win to reach a bowl game, the Frogs played tremendous defense in shutting down Southern Miss 14-12 on the road.
