Bowden ties Bryant with victory

Florida State's 30-17 victory against Virigina Tech in the Gator Bowl moved Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden into a tie with Paul "Bear" Bryant for second place for career Division I-A victories at 323, four behind Penn State's Joe Paterno. Bowden has won 16 consecutive bowl games that did not decide a national championship.

Record: 7-4, 6-2 ACC (2nd in league)
Coach: Bobby Bowden (26th season)
Key players: QB Chris Rix (24 TDs, 13 INTs), WR Javon Walker (944 yards, 21.0 ypc), DT Darnell Dockett (22 tackles for loss)
Season summary: FSU will be playing on New Year's Day despite its worst season in 15 years. The young 'Noles took their lumps in suffering two ACC losses -- including a 41-9 rout at North Carolina -- and relinquishing the league title for the first time since joining in 1992. Miami ended the 'Noles 10-year home unbeaten streak, and Florida ended a three-year drought against its nemesis. But the redshirt freshman Rix, who struggled mightily in the UNC and Miami games, came on strong, finishing as the ACC's top-rated passer.

Roster

Record: 8-3, 4-3 Big East (T3rd in league)
Coach: Frank Beamer (15th season)
Key players: RB Kevin Jones (957 yards, 5.5 per carry), WR/KR Andre Davis (1,276 all-purpose yards), LB Ben Taylor (121 tackles, 18 for loss)
Season summary: Despite losing All-American RB Lee Suggs in the season's first game, the Hokies were able to reel off six consecutive victories to begin the season and harbored legitimate Rose Bowl hopes before suffering a 22-14 home defeat to Syracuse. Obviously despondent, Tech was uncharacteristically clobbered by Pittsburgh in its next game before rebounding to blank Temple, beat arch-rival Virginia and come within a dropped two-point conversion of possibly upsetting No. 1 Miami in its finale.
