Record: 8-3, 6-2 Pac-10 (T2nd in league)
Coach: Rick Neuheisel (third season)
Key players: QB Cody Pickett (56.1 percent completions, 2,403 yards), WR Reggie Williams (973 yards), DT Larry Tripplett (14 tackles for loss)
Season summary: It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Huskies following last year's Rose Bowl, and to some degree it was. But UW started 7-1 and remained a BCS contender until a 49-24 trouncing by otherwise mediocre Oregon State. The Huskies rebounded with an important 26-14 victory over Washington State in the Apple Cup, but a much-anticipated (and delayed) showdown with Miami ended the season in disastrous fashion, with the 'Canes plastering the Huskies 65-7.

Record: 10-2, 7-2 Big 12 (1st in South)
Coach: Mack Brown (fourth season)
Key players: QB Major Applewhite (63.0 percent completions, 379 yards), RB Cedric Benson (1,053 yards, 12 TDs), CB Quentin Jammer (23 pass break-ups)
Season summary: This was supposed to be the year UT finally competed for a national title -- and it almost did. The ‘Horns recovered from a disappointing 14-3 loss to rival Oklahoma to roll off six consecutive wins before falling to Colorado in the Big 12 championship game. In that game, Brown’s perennial quarterback controversy was resurrected when Applewhite, the school’s all-time passing leader relegated to the bench, excelled in relief of Chris Simms (22 TDs, 11 INTs) and claimed the starting job for the bowl game.
