Record: 6-5, 4-4 ACC (T4th in league)
Coach: Tommy Bowden (third season)
Key players: QB Woodrow Dantzler (3,364 total yards, 27 TDs), WR/KR Derrick Hamilton (1,098 all-purpose yards), DE Bryant McNeal (8 sacks, 12 tackles for loss)
Season summary: Injuries ravaged the Tigers in the preseason, and hopes of contending for the ACC title never materialized, as superstar Dantzler often had to carry the team by himself. Clemson followed an embarrassing home loss to Virginia with an impressive overtime win at Georgia Tech, but a 38-3 defeat to North Carolina sunk the Tigers. After rebounding against Wake Forest, Clemson dropped three straight to Florida State, Maryland and South Carolina and had to beat winless Duke in their finale to become bowl eligible.

Record: 7-4, 7-1 WAC (conference champion)
Coach: Jack Bicknell (third season)
Key players: QB Luke McCown (3,337 yards, 28 TDs), RB Joe Smith (874 yards, 7 TDs), DE Jamie Nichols (4 sacks, 16 tackles for loss)
Season summary: The Bulldogs wasted no time making their mark upon joining the WAC, winning the league outright in their first season. A rough non-conference schedule saw Louisiana Tech lose to Oklahoma State, Auburn and Kansas State, and the Bulldogs caught Fresno State at the wrong time (early). But Louisiana Tech won its last seven league games in a row and four of its last five overall, including consecutive shootouts against Rice (41-38) and Boise State (48-42).
