Roster
Record: 7-4, 4-4 Big 12 (3rd in North)
Coach: Dan McCarney (seventh season)
Key players: QB Seneca Wallace (2,519 total yards, 18 TDs), RB Ennis Haywood (1,169 yards, 14 TDs), LB Matt Word (106 tackles, 9.5 for loss)
Season summary: The Cyclones secured a consecutive bowl berth for the first time since 1977-78 despite losing 13 starters from last season and despite a three-game losing streak (Texas A&M, Kansas State, Colorado) after beginning the year 5-1. The emergence of juco transfer Wallace and continued success on defense were key. ISU did not score a victory over an above-.500 Division I-A team until its finale, but that was a particularly sweet one, a fourth straight victory over cross-state rival Iowa.

Roster
Record: 6-5, 4-4 SEC (T3 in West)
Coach: Dennis Franchione (first season)
Key players: QB Tyler Watts (10 TDs, 3 INTs), RB Ahmad Galloway (881 yards), LB Saleem Rasheed (115 tackles)
Season summary: What appeared would be an unremarkable debut season for Franchione turned upward when ‘Bama, then 4-5, drilled nemesis Auburn 31-7, followed by a season-ending victory over Southern Miss to secure a bowl bid. Watts started most of the season at quarterback and showed flashes of brilliance but it was the senior Andrew Zow who saved the day against Auburn. Similarly, Galloway was the team’s leading rusher but since-suspended Santonio Beard was the star against the Tigers.
