Utes hit the jackpot

Utah downs USC 10-6 in Las Vegas Bowl

The USC Trojans came in on a four-game winning streak. They cooled off in, of all places, the desert. Carson Palmer and Co. couldn't sustain a drive against Utah's defense, as the Utes won their second Las Vegas Bowl in three years, 10-6, before the game's biggest crowd in history.

Record: 7-4, 4-3 Mountain West (T3 in league)
Coach: Ron McBride (12th season)
Key players: RB Dameon Hunter (1,396 yards, 9 TDs), QB Lance Rice (2,086 yards, 16 TDs), LB Sheldon Deckart (86 tackles, 13 for loss)
Season summary: The year began with McBride on the hot seat following a 4-7 campaign, but the Utes put those days to rest quickly, hanging tough on the road with Oregon and knocking off Indiana 28-26, the first of four consecutive victories and six in seven games. The high point was a 42-14 demolition of UNLV. But Utah fell short in each of its matchups with the Mountain West's top teams, falling 19-17 to Colorado State, 24-21 to in-state rival BYU and 38-37 to Air Force in the season finale.

Record: 6-5, 5-3 Pac-10 (5th in league)
Coach: Pete Carroll (first season)
Key players: QB Carson Palmer (58.7 percent completions, 2,567 yards), WR Kareem Kelly (768 yards, 16.7 yards per catch), S Troy Polamalu (98 tackles, 10 for loss)
Season summary: Carroll's first season post-NFL couldn't have started any worse, dropping four in a row at one point and starting 2-5. But the Trojans were never far from turning it around. The four consecutive losses, to bowl teams Kansas State, Oregon, Stanford and Washington, were by a combined 14 points. So when the schedule lightened up and once Palmer cut down on his mistakes, the Trojans took advantage, ending on a four-game win streak capped by a 27-0 blanking of rival UCLA.
