B.C. breaks through

Eagles finally defeat ranked foe

Boston Colllege broke its 21-game losing streak against ranked opponents with a 20-16 victory against No. 16 Georgia on Friday. A seven-yard touchdown run by BC's William Green was the difference in the game. Green, in perhaps his final college game, rushed for 149 yards on 35 carries.

Record: 7-4, 4-3 Big East (T3rd in league)
Coach: Tom O'Brien (fifth season)
Key players: RB William Green (1,559 yards, 15 TDs), QB Brian St. Pierre (25 TDs, 10 INTs), DE Sean Guthrie (9 sacks)
Season summary: The Eagles didn't lose to anyone they shouldn't have, but they didn't exactly rack up any marquee victories either. Their signature moment was coming within one fluky tipped-interception-for-touchdown of possibly knocking off No. 1 Miami. That also happened to be the game that star RB Green missed with a suspension. Otherwise, the only above-.500 team the Eagles beat was Pittsburgh (45-7), while suffering blowout defeats to ranked Stanford, Virginia Tech and Syracuse teams.

Record: 8-3, 5-3 SEC (T3rd in East)
Coach: Mark Richt (first season)
Key players: QB David Greene (2,789 yards, 17 TDs), RB Verron Haynes (691 yards, 7 TDs), WR Fred Gibson (772 yards, 23.4 per catch)
Season summary: The Dogs’ first year under Richt was full of highs and lows, thanks to an explosive young offense but vulnerable defense. Redshirt freshman Greene broke out with a last-second, game-winning drive on the road at Tennessee, and Georgia ended a three-year losing skid to nemesis Georgia Tech. But Georgia also feels like it could be playing in a BCS game if not for last-second home losses to South Carolina and Auburn, the latter on a questionable last-second handoff call that caused the clock to run out.
