LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Miami linebacker Chris Campbell, hospitalized this week for observation of an infection in his right knee, didn't practice with the Hurricanes on Friday.

School spokesman Doug Walker said it's hoped Campbell, a 6-foot-2, 227-pound senior, will start for the top-ranked Hurricanes in Thursday's Rose Bowl game against Nebraska.

Campbell, who underwent minor surgery earlier this month to clear out loose particles in his knee, practiced last week in Miami and had full flexibility and range of motion.

However, his knee began swelling once he arrived in California on Wednesday, and he spent that night in a hospital.

"He had the knee drained, stayed overnight for observation," Walker said after practice Friday. "There was an infection, but not a major one. They expect him back tomorrow at practice, they don't know that he can go full speed yet.

"It's still hoped he'll start in the game."

Campbell, who has started his team's last 30 games, remained at the team hotel Friday while his teammates practiced at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
