Florida gains 659 yards in 56-23 rout

It never mattered who started at quarterback for No. 5 Florida. Brock Berlin started and led the Gators to two scoring drives before giving way to Rex Grossman, who threw for 248 yards and four touchdowns in Florida's 56-23 victory against Maryland in the Orange Bowl.

Record: 10-1, 7-1 ACC (league champion)
Coach: Ralph Friedgen (first season)
Key players: QB Shaun Hill (59.9 percent, 2,380 yards), RB Bruce Perry (1,242 yards, 10 TDs), LB E.J. Henderson (150 tackles, 28 for loss), CB Tony Okanlawon (5 interceptions)
Season summary: It was a dream come true for Friedgen, a lifelong college and pro assistant who returned to his alma mater and in his debut head coaching gig took the Terps to their first ACC title since 1985 and first bowl berth in 11 years. They did it with superb defense and a balanced offense, starting 7-0, including a stunning 20-17 overtime win at Friedgen's former employer, Georgia Tech, and recovering from their sole blemish -- a 52-31 blowout at Florida State -- to rout Clemson and pull off a last-minute comeback at N.C. State.

Record: 9-2, 6-2 SEC (2nd in East)
Coach: Steve Spurrier (12th season)
Key players: QB Rex Grossman (3,896 yards, 34 TDs), WR Jabar Gaffney (1,191 yards, 13 TDs), DE Alex Brown (10.5 sacks), LB Andra Davis (107 tackles)
Season summary: Florida started the season No. 1, nearly got back despite a midseason loss to Auburn but ultimately fell short of the Rose Bowl due to a season-ending 34-32 home defeat to Tennessee. Still, the sophomore Grossman had the most prolific season of any Spurrier quarterback and the defense, until the Tennessee game, was much improved from a year earlier. The X-factor was RB Earnest Graham (72 ypg), whose two games missed were the Gators' two losses.
