Kicking their Heels

North Carolina's defense sizzles in Peach Bowl win

Ronald Curry's career at North Carolina didn't live up to the hype. He has no complaints about the way it ended Monday night. Curry scrambled for a 62-yard touchdown and the Tar Heels kept Auburn out of the end zone for nearly 59 minutes, holding on for a 16-10 victory in the Peach Bowl.

Record: 7-5, 5-3 ACC (3rd in league)
Coach: John Bunting (first season)
Key players: DE Julius Peppers (9.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss), QBs Darian Durant (1,843 yards, 17 TDs) and Ronald Curry (1,258 total yards)
Season summary: The Tar Heels recovered from an 0-3 start -- in which it appeared their two-headed quarterback situation would drive their offense into the ground -- to roll off five consecutive wins and turn the Durant/Curry platoon into a positive. After being routed at Oklahoma and Texas, UNC shocked the football world by crushing then sixth-ranked Florida State 41-9. The Tar Heels later routed Clemson 38-3 to get into conference title contention before dropping consecutive contests to Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, the latter after blowing a 24-0 lead.

Record: 7-4, 5-3 SEC (2nd in West)
Coach: Tommy Tuberville (third season)
Key players: QB Daniel Cobb (166.4 ypg), LB Dontarrious Thomas (114 tackles), K/P Damon Duval (three game-winning FGs, 44.0 yards per punt)
Season summary: What was supposed to be a rebuilding year was anything but, as the Tigers exploded to a 6-1 start, including a stunning 23-20 upset of then-No. 1 Florida. Another high point came in a 24-17 win at Georgia in which freshman RB Carnell Williams carried 41 times for 167 yards. But Williams was lost to injury in a crushing 31-7 Iron Bowl loss to nemesis Alabama, which was followed by a 28-14 defeat to LSU that cost Auburn a return trip to Atlanta for the SEC championship game.
