Record: 11-2, 6-2 WAC (2nd in league)
Coach: Pat Hill (fifth season)
Key players: QB David Carr (4,308 yards, 42 TDs), WRs Rodney Wright (1,331 yards, 10 TDs) and Bernard Berrian (1,270 yards, 13 TDs)
Season summary: The Bulldogs were the darlings of college football early on, with Carr gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated following their season-opening upsets of Colorado, Oregon State and Wisconsin. Observers were talking BCS for the Bulldogs, who started 6-0, before consecutive losses to Boise State and Hawaii dropped them from consideration. But Fresno finished on another five-game win streak, and Carr finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Record: 6-5, 3-5 Big Ten (8th in league)
Coach: Bobby Williams (second season)
Key players: RB T.J. Duckett (1,236 yards, 10 TDs), WR Charles Rogers (1,200 yards, 12 TDs), WR/KR Herb Haygood (1,289 all-purpose yards)
Season summary: The Spartans must feel fortunate to be going bowling. Following a dramatic and controversial 26-24 upset of arch-rival Michigan on Nov. 3, MSU lost three straight -- to Indiana, Purdue and Penn State -- before routing Missouri 55-7 in its finale to become bowl-eligible. The Spartans were hurt by injuries to its top two quarterbacks, Jeff Smoker and Ryan Van Dyke, though Smoker is once again the primary guy.
